The Evolution of Shisha Culture: Enhancing the Smoking Experience with Premium Charcoal
Flaming Coconut Briquette Charcoal
Shisha has undoubtedly become more popular around the world. While some people say it originally comes from Turkey and the Middle East, others believe it originated in ancient Persia and India. Nowadays, shisha smoking has gained significant popularity in Europe over the past decade. According to the World Health Organization, the rise in shisha use, especially among younger demographics, has been noted across various European countries. This trend is particularly prominent among young adults and adolescents who view shisha as a social activity, often underestimating its health risks compared to traditional cigarette smoking. With these high numbers of smokers, more and more shisha enthusiasts have shifted their attention to creating a better shisha experience.
This shift has led many entrepreneurs and business owners to produce a better shisha experience from different perspectives. For instance, there are now many more variations of tobacco flavor, shisha pipes, and shisha charcoal. In this article, we are going to dig deeper into shisha charcoal. In my point of view, one of the most important variables to get the best hookah experience is shisha charcoal, besides the tobacco itself. Shisha enthusiasts around the world have demanded a focus on charcoal quality.
In European countries, most customers demand shisha charcoal with low ash content, high fixed carbon content, and long burning times. This shisha charcoal is produced with high-quality coconut shell charcoal without any mixture of wood or sawdust charcoal. This natural charcoal mostly satisfies shisha lovers around the world, particularly in European countries, because of its premium quality. However, in some Middle Eastern countries, shisha enthusiasts prefer cheaper options with slightly lower quality than the premium ones.
Development of Changes in Briquette Size

Speaking of coconut briquette charcoal, there are many types in terms of sizes, with the most common being cube sizes. In the last decade, these commonly used cube sizes include:
- C22: 22 x 22 x 22 millimeters.
- C25: 25 x 25 x 25 millimeters.
- C26: 26 x 26 x 26 millimeters.

Another commonly used shisha charcoal size is cylinder or “finger” and hexagonal (most hexagonal charcoal is used for outdoor cooking, BBQ, and grilling). However, in the last two or three years, briquette charcoal sizes have become more varied. For example, smaller sizes like 17 x 25 x 25 mm and 15 x 25 x 25 mm, and for bigger sizes, there are 28 x 28 x 28 mm and 35 x 25 x 25 mm. Additionally, there are ‘Kaloud’ charcoals, which are circular but divided into three or four smaller pieces. This variation has proven that there are customers and trends shifting within the shisha community, demanding business owners produce more unique sizes. At Taj Charcoal, we have crafted these unique sizes to fulfill the needs of business owners and, obviously, shisha enthusiasts.
